Earthy Spirituality

The texts for Maundy Thursday, April 5, 2012: Exodus 12:1-14, 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, John 13:1-17, 31b-35

…Our faith is earthy.

Here we have the heart of our Christian practice together—
meal sharing and serving one another by washing each other’s feet.
You can’t get more earthy than that.
You can’t get more connected to the earth than through the taste of food
the smell of cooking
the sound of running water
the feel of the towel drying our feet.

It is a gift that we are given these practices—
these practices that seem so odd and yet so normal,
so connected to the every-day—
to remind us of the holy:
the holy in the everyday: in the water
and the wine
and the bread
and the dust
and the earth…

I am, well ... me. I am probably most defined by my diversity of experiences: I have lived in three countries and visited (or lived on) six continents. I love to garden and take pictures and think about theology (and grace and justice and all that jazz) and I love Jazz (and a whole lot of other music too) ... and I do yoga and go hiking and enjoy meeting new people and talking international politics and working on justice issues and watching wildlife in my yard and wandering in NYC and kayaking. I especially love sitting in coffee shops and talking to friends. I hate sitting in my office. Oh, and they call me "Pastor," at least some of the time.
