Vine-y God

The texts for Sunday, May 6, 2012: Acts 8:26–40; Psalm 22:25–31; 1 John 4:7–21; and John 15:1–8

…Vines are notorious for getting into places they don’t belong
and become problems in gardens and yards and everywhere else
I mean—if you’ve ever visited the southern United States
you see what happens when a vine gets away
Kudzu covers everything.
It has no boundaries
no limits
if you leave a car sit too long
you might not be able to find it under the mass of
green tendrils when you come back.

Vines certainly are great images of unbounded
abundant
life.

And, if that is an image of what God is
what Jesus is
We’d better watch out as God’s grace
overwhelms our barriers
and moves out into the world…

and we’d better beware
that our own boundaries
don’t cut us off from what God is up to …

I am, well ... me. I am probably most defined by my diversity of experiences: I have lived in three countries and visited (or lived on) six continents. I love to garden and take pictures and think about theology (and grace and justice and all that jazz) and I love Jazz (and a whole lot of other music too) ... and I do yoga and go hiking and enjoy meeting new people and talking international politics and working on justice issues and watching wildlife in my yard and wandering in NYC and kayaking. I especially love sitting in coffee shops and talking to friends. I hate sitting in my office. Oh, and they call me "Pastor," at least some of the time.
