Unanswered Prayers

The texts for Sunday September 30, 2012 (Lection 26): Numbers 11:4–6, 10–16, 24–29; Psalm 19:7–14; James 5:13–20; and Mark 9:38–50

Man, I’d give my eye teeth to be able to pray like that.
Maybe even my right hand.
Maybe even an eye.
…To be able to pray like Elijah and stop the heavens up for three years and six months and then to pray and have the skies rain down.

You know what I’d be praying for:
Summer. Every. Day. Forever.

Yeah, I’d give up a lot to have that kind of clout in my prayer.

Not so much for the weather, really.
More for the things that really matter:
(though really, the weather does matter…)

But, really, I’m talking more about the prayers for healing
for resolution
for people seeking jobs
for repair of relationships
for an end to violence
for a reprieve from death.
for exactly all those things that James insists that the prayers of the faithful are powerful and effective for.

Yeah right…

I am, well ... me. I am probably most defined by my diversity of experiences: I have lived in three countries and visited (or lived on) six continents. I love to garden and take pictures and think about theology (and grace and justice and all that jazz) and I love Jazz (and a whole lot of other music too) ... and I do yoga and go hiking and enjoy meeting new people and talking international politics and working on justice issues and watching wildlife in my yard and wandering in NYC and kayaking. I especially love sitting in coffee shops and talking to friends. I hate sitting in my office. Oh, and they call me "Pastor," at least some of the time.
