Here is my first ever attempt at Spoken Word (a form of poetry, for those unfamiliar).  Please be kind.  Also, learn more about Spoken Word and hear some of the best at TED here: https://www.ted.com/topics/spoken+word

An excerpt:

“Because poetry
gives words where theology cannot

Because the longing
for God
is spoken in sighs too deep for words

Because the cries for justice
in our country can barely find breath

Because we can’t breathe

Because the voice cries out
in the wilderness

Because prophets speak in poetry

Because I’m not sure how else to speak …

I find voice in Spoken Word poetry today.

It is not my native tongue

I am a stranger to the culture that gave rise
to hip hop and this beautiful
form of finding voice
when society demands your silence,

So, I tread lightly,
not owning

not demanding

this voice
to speak this way

Hoping in the cadence of this poem
that you might hear
the hopes of today’s prophets …”
